When I think Of Carl

When I think of you
I will always hear you laughing
When I think of you
I'll see the twinkle in your eyes

When I think of you
I'll think of what we did together
When I think of you
I'll never say "Goodbye"

Eleven Months Ago

Today is August 21st. It has been 11 months. Hard to believe that one day leads into another and together they add up to nearly a year without Carl. I spent part of Sunday with my parents. My mother has decorated the house with photos of Carl everywhere. In her way I think she is trying to make it impossible to forget Carl. I wish she knew that I will never forget him and neither will anyone else.

It does make it hard not to feel sad. Every photo of him smiling and laughing is a reminder that we will never hear his laugh again. We will never hear his wisecracking. We will never see him swing his thumb to his forehead after letting go of a loud blech and shout" you ate it!" It is only natural that someone so full of life would leave such a large hole in ours now that he is gone.

I wonder sometimes if life will ever be back to what would be considered normal. I don't think it ever will. My mother and sister have virtually stopped time in a sence in their need to hold on to Carl. They loved him so very much. It just hurts me to think they they may stop living because he has. Thats something I know he wouldn't have wanted.

He was always so carefree. He could be ascerbic sometimes, but in a way and with a sweetness that you could become addicted to like lemonaide on a hot Summer day. Carl always was the cure for others when they were down. He was like that from the day he was born.

He was born with a heart murmer and a respratory problem. My parents never told my sister and I this till many years later. I guess that is why he was protected so much as he was growing up. That and because he was the "baby" of the family. He was the family jokester. Carl more than any of us could make my Dad laugh. He could make my sister and Mom laugh too. That was his talent. That is a gift we all will miss.

I miss Carl. I love Carl. I will never forget nor shall I stop aching to hear his voice on the phone saying "I love you very much."

Remembering My Little Brother

As I sit here I try to think what to say and wonder who may read this. Why am I writing? It isn't as if it will make me fell less sad over the death of my younger brother Carl. It will not bring him back to us. It will not erase my feelings of guilt over the distance between us in our relationship over the last several years.
So why do I do this? I guess it is cheaper than therapy.

Lately I have found myself calling his cell phone just to hear his voice. Makes me wish I had recorded more of him talking or saved voice mail messages from him. It's strange the things we do to torture ourselves. Thats what it feels like.

When I remember Carl I think of coming home from school in the 2nd grade and my mother telling me that my little brother was sleeping in the crib in their bedroom. I remember sneaking back there with my sister Kim, and looking at his small body slowly breathing and making litle grunt sounds as he slept. That is when I first had a brother. I was 7.

I remember Carl making his "naked dashes" out of the house on Colby Dr in Jacksonville, Fl. Mom would yell to my siter and I to "Grab your brother!" as he ran with glee out into the yard to play with us, naked as a jay bird. I remember our trip to Canada when we camped for two weeks and he set his nose on fire with a burning marshmallow!

I remember being an older brother and wanting to distance myself from him because having a little brother seven years younger hanging around with you wasn't "cool". I remember making him laugh and having "tickle fights" with him and tickling him till tears came to his eyes.

I remember times when he sought my approval and how over time I began to resent that it was me who desperatly needed his approval.Yet I couldn't bring myself to let him know that. I remember asking him to be in my wedding and how glad I was he said yes.

Carl always spent most of his time with friends. I think in a way I resented that somewhat. It felt like he didn't love me as much as he did his friends. Or maybe he thought I didn't love him as much as they did? He was there when I had my bad car accident. Somehow he didn't want to loose a big brother who spent little time with him. Carl always forgave those he loved and never held any grudges. He was so much better a man than I.

They say you only regret in life what you leave undone. I regret so much. So much of what I regret is how poorly I showed my brother that I loved him. I regret that I was not there with him. I regret that I didn't go to visit him more. I regret that I ignored God's gift of a brother.

This one is in from Skip......priceless!

Carl and I traveled to Germany last year. As neither of us spoke the language, and because Jeff Card was of no assistance in this particular area, Carl and I spend three nights using the women's public restroom rather than the men's. We didn't realize our mistake until we coincidently ran into Jeff as we were coming out of the women's room and he was exiting the men's. It was a great trip. I miss him terribly and think of him daily.

Skip.
